Historical Society

The Association of Historical Societies of New Hampshire, Inc was formed at a meeting held September 15, 1950 in “The Little Red Schoolhouse” in Wakefield with thirteen societies represented. It was incorporated on October 16, 1951 with twenty-four charter member societies plus about 100 individual members. Membership is invited from all who are interested in the rich history of the Granite State. Regular meetings and educational programs are held four times a year on the 4th Saturday of April, June, August and October. The location and program for each meeting is announced in the Association’s newsletter, The Associate, which is distributed by mail to all members. The Annual Meeting of the Association, with election of officers is held in conjunction with the regular October meeting.

This Portsmouth Historical Society pilot project has converted the former city library to a new “one stop” central gateway to the historical, cultural and artistic venues of greater Portsmouth and a new exhibition site displaying the art and history of the region.

Hampton's triangular-shaped park bounded by Landing Road, Park Avenue, and Cuss Lane (across Park Ave. from the Tuck Museum complex) was dedicated as 'Meeting House Green Memorial Park' on Wednesday, October 14 (Founders Day), 1925. It is commonly called 'Memorial Park' or 'Founders Park.'

The aims of the Society (the name was officially changed in 1994) have also become broader. To accomplish its goal of the promotion and preservation of the history and heritage of Hampton, the Society conducts an active educational program of tours and lectures thoughout the year.

Several years ago, the Hampton Historical Society acquired this school house, which stood on Lafayette Road near the North Hampton town line, and moved it to its present site on the Meeting House Green.

John Paul Jones, colonial America’s first sea warrior, was a tenant of the Widow Purcell in this house in 1781 while he supervised the building of the Navy’s ship America nearby. Though he loved Portsmouth, he left New Hampshire in 1782 never to return. His house is now the museum of Portsmouth men, women and children, where their stories live.
