The mission of the Rye Historical Society is to preserve the town's past and appreciate its heritage by collecting and displaying artifacts, documents, photos and oral histories at the Rye Town Museum. Through special exhibits and regular programs and museum hours the society aims to engage people in the vital aspects of Rye's history so that current issues may be better understood and future plans respect the natural and human history of the town.
During the past several months, the Rye Historial Society and museum staff have been conceptualizing a new ongoing exhibit for the museum which will encompass the building's entire first floor. It will be a theme-based exhibit, exploring how the land and water within the boundaries of Rye has been used for the past several centuries. The Rye Historical Society and museum staff hope to illustrate through this exhibit the intersting sense of place Rye has instilled within its residents and visitors since its founding in the early 1600s.
