Description
Your visit starts ...

Your visit starts with a 13-minute orientation video at the Visitor Center, which also features exhibits to explore. To visit the Historic 19th Century Village, guests can either walk or drive two blocks to the Feast Hall at 1401 Church Street, where their tour of the historic site begins. A portion of the site is guided by a docent, with two half-hour tours typically offered—one focusing on the Rapp Houses and the other on the buildings along Cobblestone Street. All other areas are self-guided. Visitors should plan to spend approximately two hours exploring the site.

Old Economy Village

Old Economy Village is home to 17 historic buildings set amidst beautiful gardens, located 18 miles northwest of Pittsburgh along the Ohio River in Ambridge. This National Historic Landmark preserves the legacy of the Harmony Society, one of the most successful religious communal groups of the 19th century.

Founded by German Lutheran separatists under the leadership of George Rapp (1757–1847), the Society aimed to create a utopian community while awaiting the Messiah's second coming. Visitors today can explore the village's buildings, grounds, library, archives, and original artifacts, offering a glimpse into the spiritual practices, cultural life, and economic achievements of this unique community.

Facilities
The Present-day Great Garden …

While Rapp's garden has seen many transformations since its 1826 creation, it continues to draw the attention of both historians and horticulturalists and often serves as a breathtaking venue for weddings. Today it is cared for just as it was before, by the helping hands of a community and a young woman in the greenhouse with a peculiar love of plants. 2024 marked the beginning of restoration plans but, in any stage, it always remains a hidden paradise tucked away in the corner of Ambridge, PA.
