Description

The museum's collection includes over 100 different makes of old trucks, representing 94 different manufacturers such as Fageol, Freightliner, Mack, Sterling, Oshkosh, Peterbilt, and the one and only 1916 Breeding Steam Truck. Also on display are trailers, industrial powerplants, tools, equipment, and trucking memorabilia. The museum attracts visitors from around the world and serves as an educational resource for schools and truck historians.

If you live in the Woodland or Sacramento area, please consider joining our family of volunteers. Many of our volunteers started with little or no knowledge of the trucking industry--- just a desire to support a worthy project. Volunteers attend training to learn more about the museum and the trucking industry. In return, we promise the opportunity to meet visitors from around the world, the delight of showing people through the museum, and the rewards of preserving an important piece of American history.

Our beautiful new facilities are air conditioned and fully wheelchair accessible. The Center includes children's play areas, a gift shop, and a conference facility with dining and seating space for over three hundred guests. The conference facility is available for rent. Please call (530) 666-9700 or use our Guestbook for more information.

Trucks from 1903 to the 1950s. Steam, gas, diesel and electric powered. Some with rubber tires and others built before cabs were even thought of. Various drive mechanisms such as chain drive, friction drive and internal drive are on display.

Mission

The Hays Antique Truck Museum is dedicated to the procurement, care, and display of antique trucks and truck related artifacts, and the development of its archives and library in an effort to preserve the history of trucks and the trucking industry.

History

The Hays Antique Truck Museum contains one of the largest collections of antique trucks in the United States. The museum was formally established in 1982 by Mr. A.W. Hays, a pioneer and leading figure in the California trucking industry. Retired after fifty years in the trucking business, with "nothing to do," this active 76 year old man began to collect and restore the old trucks you see at the museum today.

Artifact Collections

The Hays collection includes over 100 different makes of old trucks, representing 94 different manufacturers such as Fageol, Freightliner, Mack, Sterling, Oshkosh, Peterbilt, Chevrolet, Dodge, and the one and only 1916 Breeding Steam Truck. Also on display are trailers, industrial powerplants, tools, equipment, and trucking memorabilia. Most of the trucks have been beautifully restored and many are in running condition.

Research Collections

Our trucks are available for lease for use in movie and television productions, advertisements, conferences, and special events. Please call (530)666-1044 or use our Guestbook for more information on leasing trucks from the Collection.

Educational Programs

School groups, including home schoolers, are some of our most valued visitors! For a nominal fee, we provide a packet of information to help teachers prepare for a visit to the Museum. The Teacher Information and Activity Packet includes introductory information about the museum and tips for scheduling a field trip. It also features learning activities in a variety of curriculum areas including language arts, math, science, social studies, art, and music, and a bibliography of books, videos, and other teaching materials.
