Frederick County Landmarks Foundation owns and operates Schifferstadt Architectural Museum which is one of the finest examples of German colonial architecture in the country.

History

Schifferstadt was built in 1758 by Elias Bruner. The Bruners were early German immigrants who became prominent members of the community and played an important role in Frederick's history. The impressive stone house contains many typical German architectural features still seen in Germany houses today, but constructed with local materials available in 1700's.

Governance

Frederick County Landmarks Foundation, (referred to as FCLF) a private non-profit organization, pursues the preservation of historic sites, structures, natural landmarks and communities of Frederick County, Maryland, and strives to increase knowledge and appreciation of them. To further its educational mission, FCLF not only holds special events that provide the public with a window to Frederick’s historic past, but promotes knowledge of other historical places in Frederick.

FCLF owns and operates Schifferstadt Architectural Museum, which is its main landmark and is the location of the FCLF office. FCLF has additional historic properties: the Beatty-Cramer House, and the Zion Church and Cemetery. FCLF includes under its umbrella, the Frederick County Covered Bridge Preservation Society and the Frederick Sister Cities Association.

Gift Shop

The Gift Shop at the Schifferstadt Architectural Museum and Heritage Garden offers a variety of items related to the history of Schifferstadt and Frederick, along with items made by local artists and crafts workers. Books about architecture, gardening, colonial cooking and history, along with toys from bygone eras and craft kits, bring the past to life.

Featured are local artists such as painter Harry Richardson and potter Robert Strasser. Hand-dipped candles from Dian Putman and hand-spun and knit items from Mary’s Delight Farm are also available.
