Description

The Lone Star Flight Museum is the largest aviation collection housed in a single facility in the south central United States, and features one of the largest collections of flying vintage aircraft in the world. The Texas Aviation Hall of Fame Education Center honors outstanding contributions to aviation with interpretive displays and memorabilia.

During this time of closure, museum members are encouraged to renew or upgrade their membership and we ask our visitors, groups, educators, members and donors to make a donation of any kind to the museum. Donations are a vital part of our livelihood, and like so many others, critical at this trying time. Continue to follow us on our website and Facebook or Instagram for the most current information and to enjoy the LSFM Virtual Visits.

About the Lone Star Flight Museum

The Lone Star Flight Museum (LSFM) is a 501c3 aviation museum and STEM learning center with a mission to celebrate flight and achievements in Texas aviation as well as educate and engage our youth through science, technology, engineering and math. In addition to the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame, the 130,000 square foot museum is home to a flying collection of rare and historic commercial, general aviation and military aircraft. Guests can experience the wonder of flight in a warbird ride and get hands-on in the high-tech Aviation Learning Center and Flight Academy. Multiple public and STEM-focused education programs create an unforgettable museum experience for visitors of all ages. Located at Ellington Airport, just 20 minutes from downtown Houston. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

History

The institution began as a private aircraft collection in June 1985. The tremendous interest in the vintage aircraft inspired the founder to build a facility to house and display the collection. In May 1986, the Lone Star Flight Museum was chartered, and earned its not-for-profit tax status.

With new acquisitions, the Museum soon outgrew its first facility. The search for a new home led to Scholes Field, Galveston, Texas, a long-term lease was signed, and construction of the 40,000 sq. ft. Phase I facility was begun in March, 1990 and completed in November. The Museum continued acquiring aircraft and aviation memorabilia, developed an educational outreach program, and instituted a membership program. This growth necessitated a 30,000 sq. ft. expansion begun in May 1991 and completed in September.

The 74th Texas Legislature, by Concurrent Resolution, designated the Museum to be the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame. In 1998, the Museum changed its corporate name to the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame and organized a capital campaign to fund construction of Phase III, a facility to house the TAHF Inductee exhibits, rotating educational exhibits, and other historic memorabilia related to the art and impact of aviation. Phase IV, an interpretive display and diorama facility is being developed.

Artifact Collections

The Texas Aviation Hall of Fame houses over 32 aircraft, many of which are among the last few surviving examples of the type. The award winning aircraft collection is maintained to flight condition and several fly at dozens of airshows each year. The collection also includes over 2500 reference works, 1000 historic photographs, many original paintings and aviation art prints, over 400 videos and oral histories, and over 3000 aviation related artifacts.
