Description

Located in the center of Houston's lively Museum District, the Contemporary Arts Msueum directs its full energies to finding and exhibiting the best art made in and of our own time.

History

Contemporary Arts Museum is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the U. S. Chartered in 1948, CAM is the only Texas museum devoted entirely to presenting contemporary art, defined as art of the past 40 years. CAM provides a forum for art, with an emphasis on the visual arts, and documents the new directions in art through the changing exhibitions and publications.

Artifact Collections

CAM is a non-collecting institution, as delineated by the institution's by-laws and mission statement.

Research Collections

Archives on the history of CAM are housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Available by appointment only.

CAM encourages a greater understanding of contemporary art through educational programs. CAM has developed innovative programs designed to increase the public's understanding and appreciation of the art of our time. The museum presents a balance of education programs in a variety of formats to appeal to people of different ages, levels of knowledge, and learning styles. CAM uses art history students, scholars, and artists as paid staff in lieu of a docent program. CAM is embarking on a new project, Video Jukebox. This project will allow CAM to produce short videos that address both exhibitions running at the time and broader issues in contemporary art. The videos will enable visitors to explore questions and misconceptions that frequently pose barriers to understanding contemporary art.

Publications

Newsletter 5 times a year; annual report; press releases; catalogues. An exhibition catalogue is published with every exhibition.
