Description

Mayslake Peabody Estate is part of Mayslake Forest Preserve. The preserve, once home to Potawatomi Indians, encompasses 88 acres of natural resources. The rolling landscape includes 22 acres of wetlands, lakes, restored prairie, and two small oak savannas–one of the region’s most endangered ecosystems. It is owned and operated by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and serves as one of its five education centers.

History

The mansion was built between 1919 and 1921 as the retirement home for Francis Stuyvesant Peabody, a coal baron and national figure in Democratic politics. The house was designed by renowned Chicago architect Benjamin H. Marshall. After Mr. Peabody’s death in 1922, his heirs sold the estate to the Order of Friars Minor. The Franciscans used it as a retreat for 70 years. Thanks to a coalition of citizens, historic preservation, and open-space advocates, the estate was saved from demolition. The DuPage County Forest Preserve purchased the property after a public referendum in 1993.

Under restoration, the historic mansion is open to the plublic, giving vistors the opportunity to witness its progression. Besides tours, we offer theatrical performances, cultural events, and educational programs. The chapel, grounds, and house are also available for rental on a limited basis.
