Description

We are currently in the process of restoring the interior of the historic Old Butler School which serves as the Oak Brook Heritage Center. The Heritage Center is operated by the Historical Society and, upon completion, will serve as an educational resource for the display and study of the heritage and history of Oak Brook for residents, school children and visitors alike. Small group meeting space will also be available for local organizations. Currently, the northeast library room serves as a family history center for those wishing to learn more about their ancestors and/or the early settlers of this area through the use of archival documents, photographs and various cemetery databases. Please contact OBHS for more information.

A major contribution to historical reference and research has been completed by OBHS volunteers. The Bronswood Cemetery Index is a listing, including photographs, of the more than 10,300 graves in this Oak Brook, DuPage County, Illinois cemetery. All of the memorial stones have been cleaned, photographed and catalogued and listed on this database. The inscriptions have been transcribed and cemetery records have been indexed. Bronswood Cemetery is still an active burial site, and therefore, in order to keep the material relevant and valuable, semi-annual updates are planned. The Oak Brook Historical Society is deeply grateful to members Sharon Reif, Esther Paice and Ellen Glista for their untold hours of work, and to Bronswood Cemetery for their continuing cooperation in the effort.

The Oak Brook Historical Society is a volunteer organization and our volunteers are of critical importance to the continued success of both the Society and the Oak Brook Heritage Center. These volunteer opportunities are wide-ranging from small one-time projects to leadership roles. We need both men and women of all ages to assist in the preservation and sharing of Oak Brook's history. Please consider sharing your time and talents with us in this fascinating and enjoyable work.
