Our society maintains a large collection of mining and community artifacts. We are constantly adding more to our exhibits, so even if you were to come to our museum year after year, you should still see something new.
Also, we hold the Annual Van Lear
Town Celebration, during the first
Friday / Saturday weekend in August. This is a time for all of Van Lear's citizens and former citizens to celebrate our heritage.
The Annual Celebration usually includes: a car show, free music shows, a parade, concessions, special exhibits and more.'
Museum.History='The Van Lear Historical Society, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The owns and operates the Coal Miners' Museum in the former location of the Headquarters of the Miller's Creek Division of the Consolidation Coal Company. This building was donated to the Van Lear Historical Society by Citizen's National Bank of Paintsville, KY. The group also owns and operates Rucker Park, a community park and playground named in honor of longtime Van Lear resident, Russell "Bill" Rucker.
The Coal Miners' Museum has a large collection of artifacts that relate to the history of mining and the one time "company owned"
town of Van Lear.
We have a library in the museum building. The O.W.and Carrie "Cecil" Harris Memorial Library contains a number of books on all topics. Special historical books and regional histories are amoung the volumes held in the collection. Members may borrow some books and the general public is welcome to use the library resources within the facility.
Our museum offers special group rates for school groups. In the past we have offered programs on water quality and local heritage.
