History

Founded in 1981 by Mr. Carroll Anderson, Sr., the museum moved to its current location in 1991. Located in an 1832 mansion, the building previous served as the Rosa Dixon Bowser library,the only branch of the Richmond Public Library that African Americans could patronize during segregation.
