Description

The Augusta County Historical Society will enter a new phase in 2005 with the opening of the R.R. Smith Center for History and Art. In a restored 1895 railroad hotel in the heart of historic Staunton, Virginia, we will share this adaptively rehabilitated facility with the local preservation organization, the Historic Staunton Foundation, and the local affiliate of the Virginia Museum, the Staunton-Augusta Art Center. We will have exhibit gallery space, an office suite, a climate-controlled archival and collections storage area, and a research library in which to serve our members and the general public.

History

Since 1965, the Augusta County Historical Society has served the cause of local history by offering a spring and fall meeting with a lecture program on a county history topic, and has published an annual journal on county history with articles and source materials. In addition, we now have an annual banquet with a featured speaker, and publish a newsletter three times a year. We are responsible for the upkeep of the historic Glebe Cemetery.

Artifact Collections

We have a very small artifact collection, as we are not principally a collecting and exhibiting museum.

Research Collections

The research collections include prints and negatives from three professional photographers in the early-to-mid twentieth century; various genealogical resources and unpublished family histories; manuscript letters and diaries; store ledgers; scrapbooks; published works of Virginia, Shenandoah Valley, and county history; published genealogies.

Educational Programs

The spring and fall meetings with featured speaker are our principal programs, and are open to the public free of charge. Our annual banquet also features a well-known historian, with tickets available through the office. We sponsor occasional workshops on topics such as preservation of family papers or graveyard care.

Publications

Augusta Historical Bulletin is our annual journal; Nancy T. Sorrells and Katharine L. Brown, editors. Angusta Annals in our 3-times annually newsletter.
