Contemporary Art for San Antonio/ The Blue Star Art Space is a non-profit, non-collecting contemporary art center. The Blue Star Art Space's by-laws mandate that a maximum of 50% of the board be artists. Its mission is to advance contemporary art by presenting challenging, culturally diverse exhibitions and programs. Further, Blue Star seeks to positively impact the lives of San Antonio youth by creating a community-based dialogue between artists and youths. Through exhibitions, programs, and publications, Blaffer Gallery presents art that is intellectually stimulating and relevant to the University and the community. The current exhibition policy focuses upon art of the past 100 years and its artistic, cultural, and intellectual antecedents. Following a facility expansion in 1999, the museum now presents and/or originates between six to ten exhibitions annually. The schedule may include major traveling exhibitions that have a particular relevance to Houston audiences; mid-sized retrospectives of national and international artists; exhibitions of regional artists; thematic surveys which place artists’ work into new contexts; and special projects by local artists.

More than fifty years ago, Mell Pruitt, currently a retired school teacher in Bryan began to collect and search out information on African Americans in the Brazos Valley. The small gathering of articles and photographs grew into an extensive collection about the history of African Americans in the Brazos Valley and beyond. In 1999 the African American National Heritage Society (AANHS) was founded in an effort to raise funds for the future construction of a museum to house the collection.
