The word "Elachee" is from the Cherokee language meaning "new green earth". Elachee is a woodland refuge and museum designed to involve, excite and educate visitors of all ages. Elachee Nature Science Center is located within the 1500 acre Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve. We offer a variety of environmental education programs...school field trips,homeschool programs, scout programs, adult master naturalist program, teacher education, summer day camp, children's birthday parties, public programs including First Saturday Hikes, special Saturday programs, Snake Day, Fall Family Festival, and nature-oriented volunteer opportunities. Additionally we have two exhibit halls, a live animal room with native reptiles and amphibians, and a nature shop.

Imagination Station Children's Museum

We are a non-profit, inclusive, member-run children's museum featuring interactive educational exhibits and occasional programming. Our exhibit space includes Sensorimotor Corner, the Fixer Upper, Science Corner, the Pre-Literacy Room, and the Art Studio. Marble Museum

The museum includes a year-round exhibit that includes “examples of fine marble and shows the history of marble mining in Pickens County. Many stone cutters and other workers who migrated from either Italy or Scotland in the early years of the industry settled in Nelson to work in the area’s marble industry. Today the Great Northern Railroad operates between Tate, Georgia, and the CSX interchange at Elizabeth (Marietta) five days a week. The Georgia Marble rail lines at Tate and Marble Hill, and the Blue Ridge Scenic Railroad at Blue Ridge, Georgia are also operated by GNRR. U.S. National Tick Collection

With over 125,000 accessioned lots, over one million specimens, their associated data, and an extensive library (reprints, monographs, and books), the U.S. National Tick collection is one of the largest curated tick collections in the World, if not the largest. It belongs to the U.S. National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institution) and has been housed at Georgia Southern University since 1990. The collection contains specimens from all continents, most of the approximately 860 known species of ticks, and a quarter of the primary tick types.

Cannonball House Museum

At Cannonball House we strive to educate,promote and develop public interest in the cultural, architectural and historical heritage of the community. The house is a beautiful example of Greek Revival Architecture. In 1864, the house was struck by a Union Army artillery shell, damaging the front and an interior wall. It was the only residential property in Macon damaged during the battle of Dunlap's Farm. We have a large collection of military artifacts in our museum and the house is furnished as it would have been in the 1860's, many of the pieces orginal to the house. We offer wonderful weekend events to explore life in the 19th century, such as yarn dyeing and spinning, candle making, pottery and music.
