Ashland County Historical Society

The Ashland County Historical Society is located in the heart of the Center Street Historical District of Ashland, Ohio. Its campus consists of three houses. The Manor House was the first purchased. It was built by J.P. Cowan in 1859 and sold to P.A. Myers in 1906 to be given to his son Guy and his new bride Kate as a wedding present. It was likely the first brick structure on the street.

The Chilo Lock #34 Visitor Center and Museum is located on the site of a former US Army Corps of Engineers lock and dam. The lock and dam was in operaion from 1925-1964. In 2005, the former operations building was renovated and converted into a visitor center and museum.

The Definition of Decorative Art: Sometimes known as functional art – a term that embraces all artistic works created for both use and decoration. It includes work by skilled artisans, in metal, stone, wood, and glass as well as textiles including quilts, coverlets, and tapestries. The term also refers to those aspects of interior design subordinate to architecture, including molded plaster work, wallpaper, furniture, and draperies. Personal objects such as jewelry, tools, and costumes are considered to be part of the decorative arts as well. Any and all art works with a sense of design fall under the decorative arts and are the wonderful things that we live with and look at every day. The Center also features contemporary work by artists who use the traditional decorative arts media.

Denison Museum

The Denison Museum in Burke Hall houses the collections and exhibition spaces of Denison University. The collections comprise nearly 8,000 objects from Asia, Africa, Europe, and North and Central America. The display spaces are not only used to showcase the permanent collection, but are also devoted to the presentation of a wide variety of exhibitions. The work of senior art majors is presented at the end of each season.

Currrently, a special exhibit, "Hell & Homefront: Civil War Through Fulton County Eyes" will be on display through 2015 for the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War.

German Heritage Museum

The German Heritage Museum serves as a focal point in presenting and displaying German-American culture. This museum is the first of its kind in the region and a testament to the many contributions German immigrants and their descendants have made in the growth of the Ohio Valley and America. The museum focuses especially on representing the history of German-Americans in the Greater Cincinnati area, which became and remains one of the major German-American centers in the United States. In addition, displays showcase the activities of the organizations currently under the umbrella of the German-American Citizens’ League of Greater Cincinnati.

Cleo Redd Fisher Museum

The Cleo Redd Fisher Museum serves the great Mohican area as a source for research, learning, and historical discussion. The museum provides the history of the communities, peoples, and cultures of the Mohican area. Exhibits range from detailed sources of information regarding specific events, persons, or businesses such as the Flxible Company and Charles Kettering, to more generic "period" rooms such as our Victorian parlor. The museum also operates the Workman Cabin in Central Park.

Eden Valley Enterprises

In addition to our living history programs, Eden Valley staff members are available for lectures and workshops in such areas as Ohio history, Canal history, and theatre. Eden Valley has also developed several murder mystery programs done in a similar style to the living history programs. These stories, done as dinner theatre programs or weekend events, allow the audience to become detectives and help solve the crime. The company has also produced special programs for a number of local organizations including The Health Museum of Cleveland, The Lorain County Metro Parks, North Coast Harbor, The Steamship William G. Mather, Roscoe Village, The Great Lakes Historical Society and the Western Reserve Historical Society.

Now the home of the Goshen Township Historical Society, it was the Hawkins family who christened the house "The Anchorage" during their residence in the 1940's. The house' history, however, began more than 100 years earlier as a humble farmhouse. In fact, The Anchorage is one of four stone houses built in the area at about the same time. Today only three remain.
