Gibbes Museum of Art
Charleston, South Carolina

Art

The Gibbes Museum of Art maintains approximately 10,000 objects that directly support its mission to "collect, conserve, and interpret an American fine arts collection with a Charleston perspective." This includes objects that reflect the distinct patronage of this region. The strength of the collection lies in its 18th, 19th and early 20th century paintings, works on paper (prints, drawings, watercolors, photographs), miniature portraits, and sculpture. The objects in each medium reinforce the history of Charleston as an important colonial and antebellum city, and today as a tourist destination.

The Cherokee Historical and Preservation Society (CHAPS), Inc. was formed in 1969 by a group of citizens concerned about the rapid loss of Cherokee County's historical heritage to development and progress. The group now consists of nearly two-hundred members and has taken great strides to educate the public about the significance of and protect the county's numerous historical sites. The Society is pleased to announce the opening of the County's first History and Arts Museum at 301 College Drive in Gaffney, South Carolina. An artifact-based, interactive facility that adds a new dimension to the area's already rich culture.

The Colleton Museum is a local natural and cultural history museum. At the moment we are crammed into a small space with few personel and even fewer opportunities to properly interpret the artifacts in our care. We would like to see the museum inhabit a larger space with properly curated exhibits that capture the unique history of the Colleton County Lowcountry of South Carolina.
