McNay Art Museum

Built by educator Marion Koogler McNay in the 1920s, the Spanish Colonial Revival-style home opened as the first museum of modern art in 1954. Mrs. McNay believed that the experience of great art should be available to everyone. Today more than 100,000 visitors a year become captivated by magnificent works of art by 20th-century luminaries including Paul Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. A vital partner in arts education, the McNay annually serves as many as 45,000 adults, teachers, students and families with a variety of arts education programs and educational resources, including a fine arts reference library and interpretive information about art in the museum's collection and exhibitions.

The Alamo

The Alamo began its existence in 1718 as Mission San Antonio de Valero, the oldest of San Antonio's five Spanish mission. In 1724, Spanish officials relocated Valero to the spot that the Alamo now occupies. Two original building remain from the mission period (1724-1793)-the church, or modem Shrine, and the convento, or Long Barrack. The mission was desecularized in 1793. Around 1803, a Spanish cavalry unit called the Second Flying Company of San Carlos de Parras, was quartered in the former mission compound and the site began several decades of use by the military, first Spanish followed by Mexican, Texan, United States, Confederate, and then U.S. again. The Alamo is best remembered for the epic battle which occurred in 1836 as one of the key events of the Texas Revolution.

The purpose of The World War II Memorial Museum is to honor and celebrate the people of the “greatest generation” by making their contributions and sacrifices to World War II uniquely alive and real for future generations to fully understand and appreciate. There are three main missions of The Museum: Creating and maintaining The World War II Memorial Museum, The WWII Playwriting Competition, and The School Children's WWII Educational Program. The Museum is dedicated to honoring and and celebrating the contributions of a generation that served both on the Homefront and the War front. And to teaching younger generations about their efforts.
