History, Historic House, Specialized

Located in the Historic District of Danvers (once Salem Village, infamous for the Witchcraft Delusion of 1692), primarily constructed in 1670, acquired by our chapter for a meeting place, recorded in the National Register as significant to the Historic District in 1979, declared a National Historic Site in 1986, commended for careful restoration by the Danvers Historical Commission in 1989, the Judge Samuel Holten House bears the name of our Representative to and former President of the First Continental Congress, a physician, patriot, judge, and statesman. The grounds also contain a PRIVY, circa 1823 , featured with a picture and text in Richard S. Barlow's book, The Vanishing American Outhouse.

"The General Israel Putnam Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, has enjoyed a distinguished and esteemed one hundred year history. It was organized and has been run by a long line of dedicated, committed women, who descended from many different founders and leaders of our great nation. On April 19, 1895 twenty charter members formed the chapter in honor of General Israel Putnam, a Revolutionary War soldier, born in Danvers, Massachusetts, January 7, 1718.

As the first major step in PEM’s expansion, some galleries are closed for renovation until fall 2013. The refurbished spaces will reopen with the highest level of environmental controls and a steady program of changing exhibitions. Later in 2013, select artworks from the galleries that closed will be on view elsewhere in the museum. Please consult the Gallery Updates below, and the exhibitions and collection pages when planning your visit. Stay tuned for more exciting expansion project news.

September 10 - September 13, 2025

2025 Am Assoc for State and Local History Annual Conference

TBD

Cincinnati, Ohio

The 2025 AASLH Annual Conference, in partnership with Ohio Local History Alliance, will take place as the history field makes the final preparations to kickoff off the 250th commemoration of the founding of the United States.

The 2025 conference theme, inspired by AASLH’s Making History at 250: The Field Guide for Semiquincentennial, is an opportunity to broadly explore one of the guide’s themes, The American Experiment. For many in the American colonies in 1776, independence from Britain represented a “leap into the dark” into an unknown future

We are excited for you to join us in Cincinnati as we encourage discussion about our democracy and civic institutions and how they can help strengthen understanding, inspire action, and reveal ways that all of us can participate in and shape the ongoing American experiment.

For more information, please call 615-320-3203 or email info@aaslh.org.
