Valley City State University is the only planetarium in North Dakota. It is a 24 foot dome Spitz 512 Machine.
Built in 1973 it has been a center for astronomy education. Established in 1992 by Dr. Eileen Starr, the Planetarium Science Class (Physics 275) has allowed students to learn the operation of the planetarium hands on through the creation of original presentations intended for a 4-8th grade audience.
The planetarium has a monthly public planetarium show. All other showings are by appointment only. A tour of the VCSU Medicine Wheel is also encouraged.
There is a catalogue of available shows that each last about 30 minutes covering topics of Greek Mythology, Native American Sky Stories, Time, Basic Stars and The Zodiac.
