The Montana Heritage Commission manages the state-owned assets in Virginia City and Nevada City. Day-to-day and long-term decisions rest with the Commission. Its management role includes establishing policies, procedures, and parameters to protect the assets while at the same time operating the facilities in a manner that leads to economic self-sufficiency.

Judith Basin County Museum

The Judith Basin County Museum which was opened in 1967, is located on the south side of the County Court House. The museum depicts the rich history of the county which saw the transition from open range cattle ranching to sheep-herding and the coming of the homesteaders. There were also the colorful cowboys of the Judith Basin Pool, which included Charlie Russell, the cowboy artist. The museum also depicts the stagecoach era and something of the train era.

Tobacco Valley Board of History

The Historical Village in Eureka, Montana is a collection of historic buildings and artifacts from the Tobacco Valley area. The properties, which include ten structures and their contents, are maintained and administered by volunteer workers and fundraisers inspired by a concern to preserve the history of the Tobacco Valley area.

The history of our area is brought to life through the society's collecton of photographs, artifacts and exhibits. The society is working toward a major expansion to the main exhibit building, which houses the archives, offices, gift shop and the rotating exhibit gallery. Museum History: The Big Horn County Historical Society developed the Big Horn County Historical Museum in 1978 on a 22 acre farm. Over the past 31 years the museum has grown dramtically from one building to 24 significant historic structures that have have been moved to the property from various locations.

Custer County Art and Heritage Center

This Center for the Arts opened in 1977 in the 1910 WaterWorks basins that previously produced Miles City's drinking water for over 60 years. It's located just west of Miles City, Montana on the banks of the Yellowstone River in an area that was part of the 1876 Fort Keogh Reservation. Previously, it was a common camping ground site used for centuries by the first Americans. Guided by a philosophy of public service in the arts and cultural interests, this non-profit center produces a year-round calendar of changing exhibits, workshops, classes and humanities programs.

Hockaday Museum of Art

Lewistown Art Center

The Art Center is home to the Community Labyrinth Garden, the Central Montana Writer’s Group, the Lewistown Woodcarvers and the Central Montana Community Concert Association. Over 400 members invigorate the Art Center with their participation, volunteering and financial support.

Nevada City Living History Museum

Our outdoor living history museum in Nevada City, Montana, houses one of the largest collections of old west artifacts outside the Smithsonian. The site consists of one hundred, 1863 to early 1900 buildings, and close to 40 Living History Interpreters. 14 original buildings from Historic Nevada City remain on site, many other era structures were moved to the site by Bovey Restorations, and placed on the street plan of Nevada City. The Museum is open to visitors from mid-May - mid-September, Living History weekends are held Memorial weekend through Labor Day weekend all summer long, by professionally trained living historians.

Smokejumper Visitor Center
Missoula, Montana

Smokejumpers are highly trained specialists who parachute into remote areas of national forests to fight the spread of wildfires. The nation's largest training base for smokejumpers is located in Missoula. The remodeled (1992) visitor center at the depot offers updated displays, dioramas and videos related to fire suppression. Guided tours are given of the parachute loft and training facilities.
