One of the Coastal Bend's major visitor destinations and leading nature tourism facilities, the 180-acre South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center showcases 11 uniquely-designed floral exhibits and gardens, including the new screened Butterfly House and 800-plant Bromeliad Conservatory, acclaimed Orchid House and Plumeria Garden, plus Rose Garden and massive Rose Pavilion, Hummingbird, Arid and Sensory Gardens. Strategically situated along Oso Creek on Corpus Christi?s affluent south side, this unlikely blend of beauty in the wild nearly touches the northern reaches of the world-famous King Ranch, placing it in an intriguing wildlife corridor.

Starr Family Home State Historic Site
Marshall, Texas

The Starr family moved to Texas during the formative years of the Republic of Texas and its entry into the United States. Though they haven't made the history books, their efforts to survey, map, and sell land throughout the state made them instrumental in its growth, as they helped bring railroads and new settlers to Texas. They made their home in Marshall following the Civil War to expand and solidify their land agency business. The historic site interprets four generations of Starrs and curates the collections that were left in the big house, Maplecroft, as well as caring for the sites' historic buildings.

The Society operates a museum called the Carnegie History Center, which is located in the former Carnegie Public Library building in downtown Tyler. Permanent exhibits include life-size dioramas with Smith County history topics ranging from Caddo Indians to the Twentieth Century. Other items from the Society's collections are showcased in revolving, temporary exhibits. Publications, photographs, and maps are available for purchase at the museum, as well.
