The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation is a 950-member Native American tribe which calls Central Arizona’s upper Sonoran Desert home. The tribe which once roamed over 12 million acres now owns just 24,000 acres in northeastern Maricopa County 35 miles from Phoenix. The Fort Mc Dowell Yavapai, the “Abaja - the people” are one of three Yavapai tribes in Arizona. The Yavapai are among the Yuman-speaking peoples, which also include the Hualapai, Havasupai, Kumeyaay, Pai Pai, Cocopah and other Southwestern tribes. The Yavapai have lived and worked in Central Arizona for thousands of years.

The new Musical Instrument Museum (MIM), the first truly global museum of its kind, broke ground on February 6, 2008 for its 190,000-square-foot facility on 20 acres of land on the north side of Phoenix, Arizona. Offices during the building of the museum are located in Tempe, Arizona and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Scheduled to open in 2010, this new museum will celebrate the universal language of music by exhibiting instruments from every country in the world

As more and more aircraft were restored and the Planes of Fame collection grew, an additional display facility was opened in Valle, Arizona in 1995. Located halfway between Williams, Arizona and the south rim of the Grand Canyon, this facility houses over 40 of the Museum’s aircraft, many of which are also flyable.

The Yuma Proving Ground Heritage Center and Museum depicts the history of Yuma Proving Ground. The Museum tells the history chronologically from 1942 to 9-11. As the visitor goes through the museum they will begin with the Desert Training Center moving on to the Yuma Test Branch, Camp Seeley, the Yuma Test Station, and Yuma Proving Ground. Across from the Yuma Test Station is a room which tells the history of the Liberation of the Concentration Camps, and the American Army Units that liberated those camps. The Tests of the 50's and 60's is located at the end of the center hallway. Down the hall from the 50's and 60's is a room on Munitions,the room is in Tribute to the Victims of 9-11.

Douglas has many "firsts" in aviation history. The one that tops the list is the fact that we were the first international airport of the Americas. One could fly into Douglas and taxi into Mexico and vice-Aversa. Aviation was an important part of the evolution of Douglas and was almost lost if it were not for Richard Westbrook and his wife Irma. Richard was a 1949 Douglas High School graduate who went on to work for NASA. Richard was inducted in 1993 into the NASA Hal of fame To give you insight on his wonderful gift is to walk in and see and feel the treasures he left to the community of Douglas. Many pilots who have visited the museum have told us what a well done collection and arrangement of air history he did.

There are two museums at Fort Huachuca housed in three separate buildings. All are within just a short walk from one another. The Fort Huachuca Museum takes up two buildings, its main museum (Bldg. 41401) and a spillover gallery called the Museum Annex (41305). It tells the story of the U.S. Army in the American Southwest. The second museum is the U.S. Army Intelligence Museum which takes for its theme the evolution of the intelligence art within the U.S. Army. It is in building 41411, just down the street from the Fort Huachuca Museum and its Annex.

The Navajo Nation Museum has extensive holdings of art, ethnographic, archaeological, and archival materials. Our archives collection includes over 40,000 photographs as well as a wide variety of documents, recordings, motion picture film, and videos. The archives are heavily used by authors, researchers, and publishers as a source for historical photographs.

We collect anything that helps document the culture and history of the Navajo people, including selected materials from Tribal and non-Indian neighbors. Most of the collections are available for on-site study and exhibit loan.

The museum maintains a very active and professional exhibition program, most of which is produced in-house.

Postal History Foundation consists of an Education Department, through which students receive free postage stamps for their classroom work. We have a postoffice from 1895, with many postal artifacts from the years since then. We have a working contract postal station, which is the only outlet in the state of Arizona to get all new postage stamp releases. We have a research library, with about 30,000 titles, concentrating on philately, postal history, and US Civil War history. The catalog is on line, and a link is found on the PHF website. We have a philatelic sales department, for US and foreign stamps and other philatelic materials.
