1683 Caleb Pusey House

Historic House

Built in 1683 and occupied by Caleb Pusey, this is the only building still standing which can claim documented association with William Penn, and which he is known to have visited on several occasions. The cottage was continuously occupied as a residence from 1682 through 1959. Our group was organized in 1960 to undertake restoration of the house and property which by then had deteriorated to the point of imminent collapse. With the successful restoration and a significant archeaological project, we have continued to offer education and scholarly opportunities to our constituencies. We continue to expand our laboratory facilities and are computerizing our artifact and collection catalogs.

Adams County Historical Society

An Adams County Historical Society was organized in 1888 and continued in operation for almost one year. A second society was organized in 1934 and ceased to function when its president died two years later. The third and present society began meeting in 1939. A charter of incorporation was secured the following year. The county commissioners offered some space in the basement of the courthouse, which the officers used to create a library, archives, and museum. In 1959 the society entered into a 39-year lease of the oldest building on the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg. Completed in 1832, this building was last used as a dormitory during the 1953-1954 year. The historical society occupied this building in 1961.

In 1783, a block house was built by the U.S. Government as protection from the Indians. Adam Reburn was put in charge of the block house and it was called Reburn?s Station. In 1788, Reburn purchased the property that included 200 acres of land and made it his home. Later on, John J. Muse purchased the in the mid- 1800s. John J. Muse was an active politician from 1858 to 1859 and served as treasurer of Allegheny County and represented Allegheny County in the legislature. He built the colonial farmhouse and added the orchard, pine trees and gardens.

The Cresco Station Museum: The society has regular programs at the Cresco Station Museum. From Memorial Day to Columbus Day, there is a monthly performance by local muscians and an Ice Cream Social. The museum is also the site of an Art's and Craft's Exhibit on the second Sunday of each month. Local Artists and Crafters display and sell their work. Exhibits change periodically.

The museum opened on June 5, 2010, as a tribute to the thousands of men, women and families who have hiked and maintained the 2,189 mile long hiking trail that passes through 14 states from Maine to Georgia. Located in the Pine Grove Furnace State Park in Gardners, Pennsylvania, the museum is conveniently near Carlisle, Gettysburg and Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

Bahr's Mill Preservation Society

Bahr's Mill is a stone mill building built in 1897 to house Jacob Bahr's (pronounced Bear) woodworking and grist mill business. It is part of a farm complex in the village of Gabelsville, Berks County, Pennsylvania, 1 mile north and west of the center of Boyertown. The site was home to a linseed oil mill from before 1828 until the 1890's, and woodworking machinery was installed in the early 1870's. The machinery, which includes a duplicating lathe, a polishing machine (belt sander) and a spoke-tenoning machine, has 1870 and 1871 patent dates. There are also two standard lathes, both over 10 feet long

Bayernhof Museum

the latter part of his life, Charles Brown III developed a passion for collecting old, rare automatic musical instruments. That collection is now part of the Bayernhof Museum. His collection is displayed in almost every room in the house. There are many antique music boxes, “monkey” organs, a Wurlitzer carousel organ, a Reproduco Piano-Pipe organ used in funeral homes and theaters, an Encore Automatic Banjo. There is also a Mills Deluxe Violano Virtuoso player violin and piano combination, a Knabe Ampico reproducing grand piano that faithfully “reproduces” the playing of the artist who originally recorded the roll and a huge Seeburg Pipe Organ Orchestra that was once used to accompany silent films to name just a few.

For over a century, the Blair County Historical Society at Baker Mansion in Altoona, PA has conveyed regional history and the story of the Elias Baker Family. Settling in the area in 1836, the Bakers became a very affluent family thanks to their rising dominance in iron-making. Theirs is a story of ambition, perseverance, wealth, and power–all topics that retain great influence in modern society. Their story remains a highlight of our museum.
