Set in a 90 year old depot, this charming museum captures the hopes and dreams of this small but lively Western town that was once the county seat. From Kit Carson and John Fremont, to cowboys and coal miners, experience the authenticity of the early explorers and settlers and the lives they carved out of this rugged and beautiful corner of Colorado.
The railroad depot served the community for 50 years before passenger train service was discontinued in the 1960s. The Denver & Rio Grande RR donated the depot to the town of Hayden in the 1970s, and the museum was instituted shortly thereafter.
The Sullivan Rock collection encompasses an amazing collection of fossils and minerals from throughout the west, and is a collection that would be envied by many larger institutions. In addition, the collection highlights artifacts from the local region with interpetations designed to make the lives of the early settlers come alive for the museum visitor.
The museum collection includes many local primary sources that have proved valuable to visitors doing research on a local valley level.
The Museum has a research library located on the second floor.
Informal tours through the museum are conducted during regular summer hours of operation.
