Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave

Description

The Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave occupies a 65 acre site on top of Lookout Mountain. It includes the grave site of Buffalo Bill as well as museum and large gift shop. The museum includes exhibits about Buffalo Bill's life and times. Exhibits feature artifacts used by Buffalo Bill and Wild West show performers, Indian artifacts, and firearms. The site affords a spectacular view of Denver and the Colorado Rockies. It includes the largest museum gift shop in Colorado.

Mission

The Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave preserves and interprets the life, times and legacy of William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody.

History

Buffalo Bill was buried on the site in 1917 and in 1921 the museum was begun to meet the needs of visitors to the grave. Begun by Johnny Baker, Buffalo Bill's foster son, the museum contained artifacts from Buffalo Bill and from his shows.

Artifact Collections

There are around 9,000 artifacts in the collection consisting of archival materials, photographs, artwork and 3D items.

Research Collections

The museum's archives and extensive photo collection are digitized for easy access to the information they contain. The museum has a searchable digital database of its 1700 photos on the www.buffalobill.org website.

Programs

The museum's exhibits are self-guiding. There are permanent exhibits and a temporary exhibit area that is changed annually. The museum has printed family guides available at the front desk and does provide special school programs by prior arrangement. Information about Buffalo Bill is available in 25 different languages.
