The once-dilapidated depot was accurately renovated and opened as a history museum by the Historical Society in 1993. Our impressive museum features historical displays and artifacts of the greater Black Earth area. Recently, it has undergone a refresh with exterior painting, new roof, and re-landscaping with native plants for pollinators. Come visit us!
In addition to owning and maintaining the Black Earth History Center at the 100+ year-old former Congregational Church on Blue Mounds Street, the Historical Society also owns, maintains, and operates the museum in the colorfully-restored 1860s railroad depot on Mills Street.
Established in 1992, the Black Earth Historical Society is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization of volunteers dedicated to preserving the heritage of Black Earth and serving as a resource for local historical research.
The BEHS is an affiliate of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Council for Local History southwestern region and member of the Dane County Historical Society.
