The Museum's permanent collection features art of the natural world, with historic and contemporary paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Best known for its internationally renowned "Birds in Art" exhibition each fall, the Woodson Art Museum brings eight to ten changing exhibitions each year to central Wisconsin, offering a wide array of art from around the world, enlivened by artist residencies, workshops, and programs and events for all ages.
Always-free admission. The Margaret Woodson Fisher Sculpture Gallery is a beautifully landscaped 1.5 acre garden dotted with works from the permanent collection as well as temporary exhibitions, and Art Park is an interactive family gallery in the Museum's lower level featuring changing, hands-on activities for the young and young at heart. Visit www.lywam.org to learn more.
The dedication of the Margaret Woodson Fisher Sculpture Gallery in 1995 created new collection, exhibition, and programming opportunities outdoors, closer to nature. Manicured lawns of native grasses and beautifully designed gardens featuring heirloom flowers provide an inviting backdrop for large scale sculpture as well as a range of outdoor programs. Bronze and stone sculpture from the collection are sited in the 1.5 acre Sculpture Gallery and throughout the grounds. Thematic exhibitions are presented on a two-year cycle. The Sculpture Gallery hosts OctoBIRDfest each fall as well as education programs spring through autumn
The mission of the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum is to enhance lives through art. Therefore, the Museum continually strives for excellence in providing audiences with quality art experiences through permanent collections, changing exhibitions, and education programs.
The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum began with dream by three daughters and their families to honor their mother by creating a museum as a gift to the Wausau community. Incorporated as a nonprofit educational organization in 1973, the Museum opened in September 1976. The most recent of several additions debuted in the fall of 2012. The American Association of Museums awarded accreditation in 1979 and re-accreditation in 1987 and 2002. The Museum remains committed to a policy of free admission established in 1976. As north central Wisconsin's only art museum, the Woodson serves a 15-county geographic area.
