Description

All of human history can be traced back to water. Come explore Florida's rich maritime heritage from pre-Columbian settlements to the modern era. FMM is nestled in a beautiful 1912 schoolhouse on almost 4 acres of land in the historic fishing village of Cortez.

Mission

Our mission is to preserve and share Florida's maritime heritage.

History

The Cortez Schoolhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Cortez Historic District, designated in 1995. Cortez Village retains the original charm and sense of community that has sustained the village for almost 150 years.

Artifact Collections

FMM is host to a number of engaging exhibits, including the beautiful and expansive “Blake Banks” shell collection, scale boat models, and a wide variety of maritime artifacts.

Research Collections

FMM is home to a small library of books on maritime topics that range from tales of old Florida to boat building and design. In addition to books, FMM houses a collection of boat plans, nautical charts and other archival materials that are available for scholarly research.
