Description

From a legendary permanent collection, to compelling traveling exhibitions, the MFA is ready to inspire with diverse and ever-changing opportunities to experience art. Discover 4,500 years of civilization in thousands of objects ranging from antiquity to the present – the only comprehensive art collection of its kind on Florida’s west coast. Works by Monet, Cézanne, Morisot, Renoir, Whistler, O’Keeffe, De Kooning, Rauschenberg, Pearlstein, and others are part of the Museum’s collection. Some of the highlights include a sculpture garden, a diverse ceramics gallery showcasing both ancient and contemporary ceramics, and one of the most expansive photography collections in the Southeast.

Mission

To increase and diffuse knowledge and appreciation of art, to collect and preserve objects of interest and merit, to protect works of art, to provide facilities for research and to offer instruction and opportunities for esthetic enjoyment of art.

History
Connecting the Community through Art for 50 Years

The MFA, a city of St. Petersburg landmark, opened to the public in 1965 - the first art museum in St. Petersburg. Founder Margaret Acheson Stuart wanted visitors to experience art as in a private home, which is the feeling you have when touring the many galleries. In 2008, the Hazel Hough Wing was added to the original building and the entrance leads into the Mary Alice McClendon Glass Conservatory, where weddings, corporate events and MFA programs are held. Also in this wing is the Explore More Gallery for children, the MFA Cafe with indoor/outdoor seating and the MFA Store. The installation of world-class exhibitions takes place here with the permanent collection beautifully presented in the original building.

Permanent Exhibitions
The Collection

Artifact Collections
The Collection

The MFA, located in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, has the only encylopedic collection, extending from antiquity to the present day, on the Florida west coast. The Museum has major works by Monet, Morisot, Renoir, Gaigin, Cezanne, Rodin, O'Keeffe, and many others. Ancient Greek and Roman, Asian, African, and Native American objects are particularly diverse and important. The photography collection is one of the most expansive in the Southeast. Dramatic galleries spotlight art glass, especially Steuben; decorative arts; and pre-Columbian objects. Two interior gardens, one devoted to sculpture, encourage reflection.
