History

Mr. Vernon Haskins purchased, at auction, the # 8, 1825 schoolhouse of Durham township which had closed as a school in 1940. Mr. Haskins was an avid collector of e.g. varied natural specimens, artifacts, ephemera et al. He had outgrown the space at his home, thus purchased the building on the adjacent property, being the schoolhouse, to house his many collections. Friends and neighbors stopped in to view what he had, and soon were donating and adding to the inventory. Additions followed, including a research library and we are still viable and active, now in 2006.

Artifact Collections

We have tens of thousands of artifacts, some rather mundane, while others are truly outstanding.
On exhibit at present are many locally oriented pieces as we try to maintain a local historic flavor.
We have been described as a Victorian general museum, with folk art overtones.
We now have a book shop to be proud of and a small gift section as well.

Research Collections

Our research library is mainly genealogically based with a large offering in local and other county information and history.
We are updating and adding to the collection(s) on a regular basis and via email and visitation to the library, our client base is ever growing.
