Located in Alturas, it contains several exhibits pertaining to the culture and history of Modoc County in California. Exhibits range from prehistoric cultures to modern residents of the surrounding region. Natural history including mammoth bone, and a taxidermist collection of several local species. A gun collection of over 200 firearms all used and collected by local people.
The River Center which is also housed within the museum focuses primarily on the Pit river and tributaries via education and conservation efforts. The Alturas Chamber of Commerce is also housed within the Museum and provides business and local statistical information to residents and travelers.

Was established in 1967 when the Board of Supervisors purchased the private collection of Marc and Myrtle Belli. They were long-time residents of Alturas and have been collecting historic artifacts since 1926.
Gun collection began 1870 by Nathan Rogers of Merced, CA. Native American tools and artistry of local peoples. Brands, western gear, farm tools, technological advances, military, dolls, clothing, Krobers dry good store, to name a few...
Family histories of Modoc county collected and donated to the historical society by various researchers. Architectural and commerce histories of Alturas donated by various individuals throughout the 44 years the museum has been open.
Museum is supervised by Modoc county.
