Description

The Sample-McDougald House, listed on the National and Local Register of Historic Places, is a distinctive historic house museum known for its unique architecture, history and cultural background.

In many parts of the country a one-hundred-year-old house would attract little attention, but in South Florida, a century takes us back to the beginning of our communities’ modern history. Unfortunately, we’ve lost too many of the pioneer structures as our agricultural lands have disappeared, to be replaced by an ever-expanding urban landscape. One hundred years after its construction, the preserved Sample-McDougald House is an important part of Pompano Beach’s social, cultural and civic life. It connects current residents and visitors with our region’s fascinating heritage.

Mission

The mission of the Sample-McDougald House is to interpret the house through appropriate restoration, exhibitions, education programs and tours; promote the house so that residents and visitors of all ages are aware of their opportunity to learn about the history of this region, thus furthering the social, cultural and historic viability of the community.

History

It was built in 1916 by Pompano Beach pioneer and farmer, Albert Neal Sample, who served as community leader until his death in 1941. The Colonial-Georgian revival home was sold to William and Sarah McDougald in 1943. Generations of McDougald?s were raised in the home until 1990s. The McDougald Family preserved the architectural and structural integrity of the home, making only slight changes to the property over time. Increased urbanization changed the historical character of the original home site and the McDougald family sought to sell the former farmland property surrounding the landmark structure. Upon donating the 4,500 sq. ft. building to the newly formed Sample-McDougald House Preservation Society, Inc., it was moved to its current location in Centennial Park in May of 2001. Hundreds of local residents and businesses contributed to the restoration and site development through financial and in-kind contributions. After more than a decade-long restoration funded by individuals, businesses and local governments, the home opened to the public for tours, events, venue rentals and programs in November of 2012.

Today, this historic house museum hosts approximately 7,500 visitors per year, offering opportunities to learn about the heritage of two of Pompano Beach?s prominent families through daily guided tours. Visitors learn about the unique south Florida architecture, early 20th century lifestyles and discover the regional connections to agricultural and coastal history. Guests may also visit, picnic and enjoy the 5-acre public park and heritage garden.

Governance

The Sample-McDougald House Preservation Society is a Florida not-for-profit corporation. Designated a 501(c) (3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service, contributions to the Sample-McDougald House Preservation Society are tax-exempt to the full extent of the law.
