Los Portales Museum is located in the nationally recognized San Elizario Historic District, in front of the Historic San Elizario Presidio Chapel. The Museum is operated by the San Elizario Genealogy and Historical Society.
Our purpose is to promote and preserve the history of San Elizario and encourage interest in family research.
The Los Portales building dates back to the mid-1800's and has been administered by the San Elizario Genealogy and Historic Society since 1997. The Society is a 501c3 non-profit organization.
The Society directs the Youth Volunteer Program, a High School Scholarship Program, Monthly and Private Historic District walking tours, Elementary School Historic Model Contests an a yearly free Historic Conference during the First Thanksgiving Celebration and Commemoration in April.
Housed in a building that dates back to the mid-eighteen hundreds. Three large exhibit areas, a Library and genealogy research area. Garden area with full kitchen facility, for events.
The Portales is property of El Paso County. Located in an unincorporated area.
A library of genealogical reasearch on San Elizario families that date back to the Onate expeditions on 1598.
