The Heritage Center was originally built in 1935 as the “Community Building”. During WWII an addition was built and this addition now houses the Indian River Citrus Museum. The museum has a small exhibit on the history of the citrus industry in the county and its continuing importance today.
Vero Heritage, Inc., is a non profit organization dedicated to preserving and maintaining the Heritage Center, a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Indian River Citrus Museum, housed in the Center's north wing, provides a small chronological exhibit on the citrus industry in Indian River County.
Built in 1935 as the original Community Building, the Heritage Center continues its use as a "community" building today. During WWII it was a servicemen's center hosting dances, parties and events for the many service members stationed at the local Naval Air Station. After the war it continued as a city facility and became the "Physical Arts Center" for the city's Recreation Department. Saved from demolition in 1991, it was renovated and restored and continues to be used for both public and private events today. Though still owned by the city it is maintained and operated by Vero Heritage, Inc., a private non-profit dedicated to preserving the facilty.
