The Museum's second floor has a community room with a breathtaking view of the Old State Capitol which is available for receptions, meetings, and seminars.
The National Museum of Surveying, Inc. is the only museum of its kind in the country. Located in Springfield, Illinois north of the Old State Capitol, it is the perfect addition to Springfield and its history. Inside the museum are exhibits of surveying tools from Lincoln's time, an educational mini-theater, and a 55 ft floor to ceiling mural depicting surveying from the Egyptian rope stretchers to Abraham Lincoln. In addition, The National Museum of Surveying, Inc. is home to the Science on a Sphere® (SOS). SOS is a room-sized globe developed by NOAA (The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). First and foremost, the National Museum of Surveying, Inc., brings attention to President Abraham Lincoln’s years as the Deputy Sangamon County Land Surveyor (1833‐1837), through exhibits, displays and audio/ video presentations. As you walk through the museum, you will learn the story of land surveying and the profession that laid out the neighborhoods, communities, and transportation systems of our nation. Another goal of the museum is to educate and inform the public about land surveying and the profession that laid out their neighborhood, communities, and transportation system. The SOS is the breathtaking, reverse IMAX experience that provides a way to look at the world and universe around us that defy the imagination. The SOS vibrantly and impressively shows the living, breathing Earth through showing NOAA provided data sets like the Earth at Night, Ocean Currents, Hurricanes, Migration of Sea Life, and the Big Bang. The SOS does not stop there, as the SOS can take any image, video, or idea and transpose it on the "video" screen. Thus, the SOS is a community educational tool along with an exhibit in of itself, as we plan to provide opportunities to schools and students to customize their SOS experience. The museum is also planning to create specialized exhibits on the Civil War, surveying, maps, and any other timely historical/seasonal event to provide an opportunity to experience the holidays or history in a unique way.
All in all, the museum is constantly updating the SOS. As the museum is still in its infancy, the future is open to many possibilities, but as of now, we have a rich surveying exhibit, SOS, and we have a separate exhibit room that will host the Downtown Christmas Walk for Springfield. Eventually, this room will house another surveying exhibit along with special exhibits.
Launched in 1989 in Lansing, Michigan, the new National Museum of Surveying (NMoS) opened its doors in downtown Springfield, Illinois in 2010. As the first and only museum dedicated to preserving and interpreting the nation's history of mapping and surveying, NMoS will present the innovation of the profession on a grand scale by displaying exhibits that inspire, amaze and surprise.
Murals depiction how surveying influenced the development of America. Historic surveying equipment. DVD of C hosing a Career in Land Surveying. NOAA Science on a Sphere animated 60" globe
Historic surveying equipment, maps, surveying records and a vast collection of surveying books, magazines and surveyors notes.
With our special event room, we will host lectures on various topics related to Surveying, Illinois, Lincoln, and/or Science. Interested parties can also rent the special event room. IN the museum, we have an educational room devoted to promoting the career of surveying. This room is provided through a grant from NCESS. In the gallery, we highlight the history of surveying through murals, artifacts, and eventually, special exhibits. We will also provide opportunities to test surveying equipment. In regards to the Science on a Sphere, we host teacher workshops along with scheduled teacher groups, and we provide demonstrations and information on the Science on a Sphere. We are hoping to collaborate with area and state schools in promoting the Science on the Sphere and Surveying within the curriculum. We will develop teacher oriented Science on a Sphere presentations for visiting tour groups. We will develop student created presentations on the Science on a Sphere. Currently, Robert Morris has an integral role in developing data sets for the Science on a Sphere, along with volunteering at the museum. In regards to area organizations, we are hoping to offer experienced based learning for students and groups like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, SkillsUSA, STEM, and various other organizations. Finally, to create an extension for students and teachers, we will develop teacher packets consisting of lesson plans, activities, and extensions on both surveying and Science on a Sphere. Between the Museum of Surveying and the Science on a Sphere, we can provide a rich and sustained educational program, as on top of the standard tour we can create specialized tours to meet the needs and dreams of any group.
