Pinellas County African American History Museum
Clearwater, Florida
Description

The Museum serves as a repository of historical and cultural information and physical artifacts primarily relating to African Americans in Pinellas County, Florida. We also sponsor several unique events each year including the following:

  • Toast To The Legends - is an annual event which honors and recognizes pioneer African American families. Family members provide those attending with a display of family artifacts and an oral account of the family's contributions.
  • Children’s Magical Village - consists of entertaining workshops coupled with educational information on traditional African culture. Students from several Pinellas County Schools meet on the last Friday of each February at Pinewood Cultural Park, Largo, to attend the "Florida African American Heritage Celebration," sponsored by the Pinellas County African American History Museum.

History

Located in a building that once served as a school for African American children, Curtis Elementary School, the museum is located in Clearwater, Florida. The museum was the brainchild of Sandra Rooks and Randy Lightfoot, two Pinellas County educators. Incorporated in April 2000, the two thought of the idea when they were teaching a summer class in African American history at a local high school.
