The landmark 1853 former Central of Georgia Railroad headquarters, now Kiah Hall, houses the SCAD Museum of Art. The museum is open to the public free of charge Monday through Friday 10 am-5 pm and Sunday 1-5 pm. The SCAD Museum of Art, dedicated in May 2002, offers a year-round calendar of exhibitions, lectures, classes, special events, and tours. The museum serves as a teaching museum, with numerous class field trips and special topics classes serving the needs of the college community as well as the broader regional community and the large number of tourists to Savannah.
The mission of the museum and its related study centers is to engage in education, research, collection care and development, campus and public service, and exhibitions and other programming that will promote art historical, cultural, interdisciplinary and cross-cultural studies and dialogue.
The Savannah College of Art and Design is a non-profit, specialized arts institution offering The college offers Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Architecture, and Master of Urban Design degrees in a variety of fields (a total of 86 degree programs). It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools with the M.Arch. degree additionally accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. The Savannah College of Art and Design exists to prepare talented students for careers in the visual and performing arts, design, the building arts, and the history of art and architecture. The college emphasizes learning through individual attention in a positively oriented environment. SCAD was featured by Newsweek (August 2005) as the “hottest school to study art” in the country (repeated in the 2006 Kaplan/U.S. News & World Report College Guide) and in August 2006, Time magazine identified SCAD as an outstanding alternative to the Ivy League, noting that SCAD “has gained a national reputation by offering demanding degrees in subjects like fibers and interior design”.
Founded in 1978, current enrollment is approximately 8,200 students who are taught by some 500 faculty members. The majority of the students are undergraduate (about 84%) with an average age of 21. About 7% of undergraduates and 20% of the graduate students are international. The most popular states students come from are Georgia (18%), Florida, Virginia, New York, and Texas. The most popular majors are graphic design, film/television, animation, fashion, and photography.
The college has campuses in Savannah, Atlanta, and Lacoste in Provençe, France, as well as online courses and programs. The main urban campus fabric consists of more than 60 rehabilitated historic buildings located in the colonial port city of Savannah (metropolitan area population of 313,883 in 2005), and the campus has been honored with numerous national awards for preservation and urban design from the American Institute of Architects, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and others. Programs in historic preservation, architectural history, art history, and related areas work in concert with the rich architectural, cultural and aesthetic resources of the region. The college is also an acknowledged educational leader in digital arts, with degree programs in animation, visual effects, sound design, broadcast design and motion graphics, interactive design and game development, and other fields.
