Description

Today, Tampa Historical Society focuses on its Historic Landmark headquarters: the c. 1890 Peter O. Knight House. The House, located in the larger context of Historic Hyde Park, is a perfect tool for interpreting Tampa’s middle class in the era and district where it first grew and stabilized. Through its Collection, its publications, its educational programs, and its events, Tampa Historical Society/The Peter O. Knight House continues a long and successful relationship with Tampa, linking past, present, and future.

The Society invites you to join its Members and Board in exciting local history! Benefits of Membership include

1. The Sunland Tribune, one of the most prestigious annual journals of local history in the South;

2. Invitations to exciting annual events (including the charming “Knight House Dresses for the Holidays”, a summer Meet the Author event, a “frightfully fun” October fundraiser, and two guided tours of Oaklawn Cemetery);

3. Volunteer opportunities in historic preservation, research, fund-raising, and more!

History

Tampa Historical Society, Inc. was founded by native Tampan, historian, and educator Anthony Pizzo. In 1971, Pizzo gathered around him a group of like-minded people, all of whom were concerned that Tampa and Hillsborough County – so rich with heritage and history – had no “umbrella organization” to preserve and interpret that history. The Society was incorporated under the laws of Florida as a not-for-profit entity and went into immediate action. Programs and publications, lectures, book-signings, discussion panels: before long the Society had a packed calendar of activities.
