Description

The Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology is the only accredited natural history museum in the country on the grounds of a secondary school campus. With two floors of public exhibits, a scientifically significant research collection emphasizing fossils from the western United States, and an active research program involving high school students, the Alf Museum provides an unforgettable experience for all visitors.

History

Beginning with a fortuitous find of a new species of fossil pig in the Mojave Desert in 1936, teacher Ray Alf introduced generations of students to the science of paleontology. In 1968, the museum's current building was opened to house an ever-expanding collection. Most of the fossils on display were collected by high school students from The Webb Schools, including previously unknown species of dinosaurs, horses, rodents, and more. In addition to public displays, the museum's research collection serves as an increasingly important resource for scientists worldwide.
