Our vision is to collect, preserve and disseminate the history of the Virginia area for the benefit of people of today as well as future generations.
The Virginia Area Historical Society was organized in 1978 to discover, preserve and disseminate the history of the City of Virginia and the surrounding area. The museum has been located at the former Olcott Park Superintendent's residence since 1993.
Our artifact collection includes artifacts that are representative of our area - commercial, industrial, mining, household, ethnic, farming, etc.
Our archive collection is primarily about the history of Virginia and the surrounding area. Some of the items include primary source materials, photographs, vertical file material, city directories, phone books, school yearbooks, newspapers, etc.
The historical society has a speakers' bureau whose members are willing to present programs at area functions. The public is invited to our monthly membership meetings which include programs of a historical nature. We also have programs at other special functions such as our annual meeting and Fall Fest. We do special programs at the museum for school students and other groups.
