The Alvin Museum Society is an active organization of local-history-preservation members.

The Society owns and operates the Marguerite Rogers House Museum and the Alvin Historical Museum.

Currently, the Alvin Museum has over twenty permanent exhibits from Prehistoric, Indian, the Formation of Texas and Alvin, Railroad, Ranching, Farming, War and more are available for viewing. Other exhibits are being constructed. Temporary exhibits which highlight special interests are being changed every few months. First-class movable shelving in our accession area houses over 10,000 photographs and artifacts in the collection. Offices have been outfitted with furnishings and basic computer equipment and have an Internet connection.

Except for the basic renovation costs, the Alvin Museum Society has paid for all other improvements through fundraising and generous in-kind gifts from individuals, local businesses and organizations.

To preserve Alvin's history, to educate and to engage the community. .

History

Since the successful bond issue of 2001, the City of Alvin has renovated the former post office to house the Alvin Historical Museum. Located in the historic downtown section of Alvin, the museum is a major on-going project of the Alvin Museum Society.

Artifact Collections

Over 20 permanent exhibits with major focus on the history of the town of Alvin, the industry and business and the people who were part of that history. Also offers regular changing temporary exhibits.

Research Collections

Historical artifacts as well as an extensive collectionary of photographs and documents.

Programs

Educational programming includes: special guided tour for groups of all ages from Cub Scouts to senior Red Hat ladies. Docent tours are available for permanent exhibits as well as for temporary exhibits. 1st thru 8th grade level programming under development related to dairy exhibit.

Facilities

Museum occupies the former U.S. Post Office building and owns a historical home that is off site and used for special annual events when it is opened to the public.

Services
Museum Gift Shop

The Alvin Museum Gift Shop located in the foyer of the Historical Museum provides a selection of books, memorabilia and gift items. Some of the books relate to Alvin community history and other items are handcrafted by local artists. The shop is self supporting and proceeds from sales benefit the museum.

Volunteers staff the shop which is open during the museum's visiting hours.

There is no charge to visit the gift shop.
