The NEWTON COUNTY HISTORY CENTER (213 Court and Houston Streets) houses Newton County Archives/ History/Archaeology/Genealogy/Oral History/Historic Photographs/Photo Laboratory/Artifacts.
The Historic W. H. Ford College/Powell Hotel building/museum is located at 313 Rusk Street adjacent to the Historic Newton County courthouse. It is open during June/July/August from noon till 4:00p.m. Mon.-Fri. It may also be toured by special arrangements with the Chair of the History Commission.
The Newton County Historical Commission has (year 2000) completed 28 consecutive years as a Distinguished Service Award recipient from the Texas Historical Commission. Also, it received the Texas Governor's Award for the preservation and restoration of the Ford College/Powell Hotel building. It has published
three Historical Books (which are available for sale ) on the History of Newton County. During the year 2000, we had over 1800 registered visitors and the Commission members contributed over 6000 volunteer hours to the work of the Newton County Historical Commissions.
Newton County Artifacts only. Must be owned by or made by Newton County natives and/or residents.

Exhibitions, gallery tours, lectures and Heritage Education. Elementary school-level essential teaching for local history; archaeology; not available for tour/loan.
Annual reports to the Newton County Commissioners' Court and the Texas Historical Commission on a yearly basis
