Art Center Waco
Waco, Texas
Description

The art center is an AAM-accredited institution and it continues to strive for excellence as it operates under professional museum guidelines and standards. We seek to provide quality exhibitions with art, as well as exceptional programs, classes, and tours, so that visitors of all ages and backgrounds can engage with not only art but ideas.

History

Art Center Waco was established in the early 1970s in downtown Waco, and moved to the current location on the MCC Campus in the early 1980s. Renovating the Cameron Family summer house established the art center in a location that is suitable for not only art exhibitons and progams, but for use by the community as a center for meetings, weddings, parties and other special events. The house is owned by McLennan Community College and was built as a wedding present for Mr. Cameron's bride in 1924. (The Camreon Family figures prominently in Waco history; Waco's Cameron Park, which is larger than Central Park in New York,is named in honor of the family who deeded the land to the city.)The Mediterannean-style villa houses exhibition galleries, studio classrooms, a clay studio, gift shop and offices for professional staff. A large courtyard, which was once the site of a swimming pool, is available for rentals.

Artifact Collections

The art center is a non-collecting institution.

Research Collections

Although the art center does not house permanent collections, it strives to present a broad selection of artists to the community, including those representative of diverse cultures.

Programs

Art Center Waco has become very interested in community outreach. For exmaple, we host an annual El Dia de los Muertos Celebration, offer tours and hands-on activities to school children, and design custom programs by request to the meet the needs of diverse audiences.

Governance

The center is managed by a board of trustees and the executive director and operates as a non-profit organization.
