White Settlement Historical Museum
White Settlement, Texas
Description

We have erected a windmill and have acquired a historic log cabin, built in 1864. We have constructed a replica of a well and have provided a typical outhouse. Frances Colwell has published a booklet detailing the history of the cabin complete with many old photographs.

Mrs. Colwell has collected information and is preparing another historical book on the Thompson Cemetery. This cemetery was restored by the White Settlement Historical Society after decades of neglect and valdalism. The Judd Street Cemetery was also restored.

We hope to instill in the minds of the children in our area the importance of maintaining community history. We do this by encouraging school class visits and by taking our exhibits to school classes.

We arfe indebted to our city for making it possible for us to do this without an admission charge.

Mission

Our mission is to display by exhibit items and historic documents a glimpse of the lives and times of our early pioneers. The history of our community dates back to the early days of the Republic of Texas, but did not expand until the early 1850's. We have over 1000 exhibits relating to the history of our community.

History

The White Settlement Historical Society, established in 1975, has endeavored to collect historical information about the community and its pioneer founders, its schools, graveyards and progress through the years. The Thompson public cemetery has been restored and is maintained by the Society. In 1991 the city of White Settlement provided a building and grounds for a museum and later arranged for financing from the motel tax. The museum was a volunteer opereation until four years ago when a part time manager and one employee was hired.

A web site was started in the early 90's and has published histories of our community. www.wsmuseum.com.
