Description

Named for one of Pitt County's colonial families. Site and artifacts here bequeathed to town of Farmville by May family descendent Tabitha Marie DeVisconti.

The May Museum and Park is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of the Town of Farmville and the surrounding areas of western Pitt County. It chronicles the agricultural, commercial, domestic life, and transportation history of the area from colonial times to the present. The museum interprets the area's history through permanent displays, rotating exhibits, and special programs, which are offered periodically throughout the year.

The Museum occupies an 1850's era home which is located in the National Register of Historic Places Farmville Historic District. Its extensive archival holdings consist of approximately 10,000 photographs, 20,000 records and 10,000 artifacts.

Artifact Collections

The collection includes a wide variety of materials relating to the area's history including: May family correspondence, materials from the office of Congressman Walter B. Jones, Sr., maps, commercial and legal records, postcards, scrapbooks, club records and genealogical data. Examples of period furniture, glassware, agricultural implements, militaria, and a variety of domestic life items comprise a great portion of the museum's collection of three dimensional artifacts.
