The purpose of the Westmoreland County Museum and Library, Inc., is to preserve the history of Westmoreland County for public benefit through exhibitions, programs, and research materials in order to increase the understanding and appreciation of our heritage. Adopted July 11, 2001
Collections include a 1769 portrait of William Pitt, Earl of Chatham, by Charles Wilson Peale as well as Colonial and Native American artifacts. The library houses the Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Society.
Believed to be the oldest museum in the Northern Neck, the Westmoreland County Museum and Library, Inc., was completed in 1939 under the leadership of prominent county citizens, and dedicated in 1941. It was established to give a permanent home to Charles Wilson Peale's portrait of William Pitt, Earl of Chatham (1768) which had been given to the gentlemen of Westmoreland County, and to provide a location for artistic, recreational, and educational facilities.
