A great museum for history and aviation buffs, exhibits feature Wright Glider replicas and SR-71 Blackbirds. Part of the Science Museum of Virginia.
Many of the airplanes on display at the Virginia Aviation Museum came from the private collection of Sidney L. Shannon Sr. Mr. Shannon was an airman whose career ranged from the days of open cockpit biplanes to jets. He was closely associated with Eastern Airlines. The Shannon Collection of antique and historic aircraft was started in the 1960s by Sidney L. Shannon Jr.
In 1976, he built the Shannon Air Museum at Fredericksburg in honor of his father. The collection was left to the Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society after Shannon's death in 1981. The Society built the Virginia Aviation Museum in 1987. Private donors and the National Air and Space Museum have added to the collection. The Society donated the museum to the Science Museum of Virginia in July 1990.
