The permanent collection consists of over 3,500 works of art encompassing a diverse group of objects from antiquity to the present, Eastern and Western art, examples of almost every material and medium are represented.

History

The Muscarelle Museum of Art was a gift to The College of William and Mary from alumni and friends and was built entirely with private funds. The major benefactor was Joseph L. Muscarelle (W&M ‘27) who offered to sponsor the building of a museum to house the collection of works of art owned by the College
