The Mathews County Historical Society was established in 1964 to preserve, study and promote the unique heritage of Mathews County, Virginia. The Society is engaged in a number of activities to promote its objectives and further the interests of its members. Major activities include a study to preserve New Point Comfort Lighthouse, and development and interpretation of Fort Nonsense, a Civil War earthworks in Mathews County.
