The Tavern Museum

The Museum was created by the King and Queen Historical Society through the efforts of a small group of enthusiastic citizens interested in preserving and communicating county history. It opened in May 2001 and has continued to operate through the dedication of volunteers.

Tour Highlights

The Courthouse Tavern building dates from 1800 and today serves as a museum housing informative exhibits depicting the history of King and Queen County and how its residents lived from the pre-Colonial Native American era to the mid-Twentieth Century. View a brief tour of the facility and visit us to see much more.

Historic Courthouse Green

The Museum is located in the Historic Courthouse Green that is on the National Register of Historic Places. View to see the other nearby places of interest.

Other items, including historical artifacts of King and Queen County, children's books, maps, post cards and note cards are available in the small Museum Store, which we hope you will visit in person.

Got $50?

The Dining Room on the ground floor of the Tavern Museum may be rented for various functions for a $50 fee that includes; use of the early 1900s period room with tables and chairs sufficient to accommodate a group of not more than 25-30, use of the catering kitchen with stove, dishwasher, and refrigerator for heating and light preparation of food and beverages, and a tour of the Museum's upper floors.

The ground floor of the Museum is handicapped accessible. Bathroom facilities on the ground floor are also equipped for handicapped. There are stair glides to the second and third floors to provide access to both upper floors. All of the Touch Screen tours are available to the handicapped on the monitor on the first floor.
